How to prepare for a Headshot Portrait:

What is the best way to prepare for a headshot or portrait session. I always start with what are you going to wear for your actor headshot or business portrait session. Let me start with what actors should wear for their portrait session. A lot of actors will arrive to the studio with a very limited number of outfits. Sometimes just two t-shirts. This is just limiting the impact your headshot will have. I strongly advise you to bring plenty of different outfits, A wide selection of clothes from your wardrobe and your friends wardrobe! From shirts, v-neck jumpers, t-shirts, jackets leather and denim to any outfit you have that has an interesting neckline. Have a look in the mirror at your eyes and try to pick colours that match your eyes colour. There is nothing wrong with wearing bright colours just like there is nothing wrong with wearing white or black but those two colours will probably not make you stand out from the crowd. Actors get the best headshots wearing what they are most comfortable in but remember you are trying to impress an agent, casting director, producer etc. They want to know that you are professional, smart and good to work with.

A business headshot would be slightly different. You will have a good idea of what is expected of your chosen line of work. I would always recommend bring along a few different outfits as you might be surprised how certain colours or patterns come across on camera. Make sure the clothes are not creased and fit you well. Block colours tend to work best rather that too many stripes. polka dots etc.

Should I wear Make-up for my Headshot:

What should my make up be like for an actor headshot? This would also apply for a business headshot. This is a question at Roger Kenny Photography that we regularly get asked. The answer is that it all depends on you! If you are young female actor I would keep your look as natural as possible. Arrive to the studio with a minimum amount as you can always add more later. If you are someone who goes to the shop with a full face of make up well then maybe you should get your headshot with a full face of makeup. As this is how you normally see your-self and how others normally see you. But remember the casting director does not know you and will want to see you as natural as possible. They will be able to imagine you with full make up on. Some female actors will book a make-up artist before the shoot but be sure that they know what they are doing. You are not looking for a high end modeling shoot make up. The make up should be light and fresh. Not too much around the eyes and preferably do not wear false eye lashes! Too often actors have arrived un-happy with hair and make-up that they got done prior to the shoot and spent the first 20 minutes trying to “fix it up”. A good rule of thumb would be to wear make up to your headshot session similar to what you might wear to an audition.

Are the finished photographs retouched:

Let me first explain a little about what happens during your headshot portrait session at Roger Kenny Photography. When you arrive at my studio in Greystones Co Wicklow we will have a short conversation. About what you are looking for and also have a quick look through the outfits you have brought. Then it is into the studio to get creating. Throughout the shoot I show you what the photographs I am taking look like on a large screen. This is great for you as it allows you see all the great things you are doing but also will let you correct little things to make the photographs even better. During an average headshot session of 60 - 90 minutes I will take anything up to 500 photographs of you. When we are looking through the photos we choose the best. These best photographs are then cropped and edited put in a private online gallery. This is usually about 10% of the images taken. In the private online gallery you and your agent can view in your own time the selection of headshots you have made. Then you choose your final selection of images. Your final photographs are either lightly retouched with a natural look by myself or if you would prefer a more high-end editorial finish with full professional retouching to your headshots and portraits they are sent to Martina of Blackmilk Retouching in New York. Over the last couple of years there has been more actor getting a very natural look and finish to their headshots.

If you need any more information about your headshot session please just call for a chat. So many get in touch telling me they hate getting their photograph taken. But I really do make it as easy and as enjoyable as possible for you. After the headshot portrait session you should feel empowered and confident to take anything on! - Roger
